Dear Students
Happy Leap Day, everyone! In honor of leaping around in time, our Quick Write was about time capsules. We watched a short video on the opening of a time capsule buried by Samuel Adams and Paul Revere in 1795. Students had three options to choose from on this topic.
After that, we reflected on the themes and characters of the short stories that were assigned last class period in Literature: “The Gift of the Magi” & “After Twenty Years.” After reflecting, they got into small groups to discuss and report their findings back to the class. We found that even though they are very different stories, we could still find common themes on generosity, honesty and the struggles of the working class. They are enjoying these O. Henry stories and have two more for next week along with a Short Story Packet. I gave the warning to make sure to read carefully for next week as there is a STRONG possibility there might be a “pop” quiz.
For Writing, students were to bring a copy of their Propaganda Projects (Part A) to class. The purpose of this was to invite a fellow student to Peer Review their work. If there are any changes they need to make, they have a week in which to do so. The final draft of Part A of this assignment plus the write up on it are due next week.
Along with that, Part B of the Propaganda assignment is due: The Brief Blog Post. For this assignment, you find an advertisement that has a good use of propaganda and rhetorical devices. You will analyze the commercial for those two items (see example posted on GC) and then post it on our class’s discussion forum. In order to get the points, you will need to respond to another classmate’s original post and give them constructive feedback. Ideas for that are included in the assignment description.
Last, we reserved some time to work on Grammar worksheets together. After passing out and looking at a Venn diagram on Linking Verbs, we used them to complete two worksheets on different sentence patterns: N-LV-N & N-LV-ADJ. Varying sentence structures is one way to make your writing more interesting. Many students finished in class, but if not, they are to be finished as homework. Please note, we are one week behind on Grammar, so mark your syllabi accordingly.
